Obituary: Bedford L. Griggs 1924 - 2012

Bedford L. Griggs, 88, of Clarkdale, died Dec. 3, 2012, in Flagstaff.

He was born July 23, 1924 in Fullerton, CA, the son of Bedford Sr. and Gertrude Griggs.

After a varied career in the petroleum industry and deep sea recovery, he joined the Sedona Airport Administration as the Airport Ambassador where he loved meeting and visiting with thousands of tourists at the Airport Mesa Overlook and sharing his love of Sedona.

He served in WWII aboard the USS Teal sea plane tender in the Aleutian Islands.

Among his many accomplishments, he was an officer on the Hughes Glomar Explorer, which raised the remains of a Russian submarine in a secret CIA operation, was part of the crew that recovered the gold treasure of the USS Central America, skydived at age 85, and was the oldest driver, at 87, to compete in the 24 Hours of Lemons endurance race.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Peggy Felton of Nevada and is survived by his three sons, Curt Griggs (Marti) of Clarkdale, Steve Griggs of Wyoming and Scott Griggs of Nevada; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
