2012 another banner year for Big Park School
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and fun winter vacation. I always take advantage of this time and fly back to Maine for a week to see my two daughters, grandson, and granddaughter.
I enjoy my time in Maine but it is great to be back in the land of the red rocks and blue skies.
Year 2012 was another good year for the staff and students here at Big Park. It is a pleasure to have a job where one looks forward to coming to work in the morning because of the great atmosphere of the workplace.
We still consider ourselves to be one of the top schools in the state of Arizona even though we didn’t get top billing this year.
I mentioned in last month’s article about an electronics recycling fundraiser that we were conducting with the help of Nancy Zielinski and Jake Weber.
Nancy was the main force behind the effort and Jake supported us by letting us use his store as a dropping off site. We received $2,000 as a result of this initiative.
Thanks to both of them, especially Nancy for spearheading the project!
I have been advertising for a part time aide in our primary grades for several months but haven’t had any applicants.
So maybe there is someone in the community who has some time to help the younger students and would like to apply.
I am usually asking for volunteers but this time I am asking for someone to help and also get paid for it.
Please give me a call if interested.
I am very pleased to see the improvements being made to Verde Valley School Road, the wider shoulders will make it a much safer route to school.
The local Kiwanis club sponsors a Geography Bee and a Spelling Bee for our students.
The winner of the Geography Bee held earlier this month is Violette Garza-Callahan, an eighth grade student. Over thirty students took part in the contest.
I want to again thank those of you who contributed to our school through the tax credit program again this year.
I realize that it is a tough time for many families because of the economy so it is especially gratifying to receive so much support. I especially want to thank those community members who also helped us get the word out to other community members about this program.
This program has allowed us to continue to offer afterschool activities and also for individual classes to take some exciting and worthwhile field trips.
I continue to want Big Park to be an integral member of the Village. So if anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how we can help in the community, please call the office or stop in and talk to me.
Have a good month and I’ll be back for another article in February.
