Cathedral Rock, postage statehood symbol
The Arizona Centennial Postage Stamp released Tuesday morning, celebrates a Verde Valley favorite: Cathedral Rock.
The portrait on the commemorative "Forever" postage stamp shows the rock formation that is said to be the most photographed location is Arizona. The butte is portrayed with its sedimentary layers
The stamp was created from a painting by Phoenix area artist Ed Mell. An Arizona native, Mell told the press he was a childhood postage stamp collector and the consignment was a dream come true.
The centennial committee discouraged the depiction of the Grand Canyon or saguaro cactus, which they felt had been overused.
Officials at the Cottonwood Post Office reported Tuesday that the commemorative stamps were selling fast. They received only 1,500 stamps, though they had ordered 8,000
