Letter: City of Cottonwood Youth Basketball thanks you

The City of Cottonwood Parks and Recreation Department would like to extend a thank you and congratulations to all 20 teams and coaches who participated in the Cottonwood Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball League this year.

Boys and girls ages 7-14 once again left the court with a smile on their faces thanks to the tremendous effort brought forth by the volunteer coaches and parents.

The Mighty Mites Division, co-ed ages 7-9, had 8 teams with a great blend of 4 new coaches and 4 returning coaches. There is a strong emphasis on learning and fun at this level and all of the coaches were able to get the message across to their players with great success. Thank you to Jon Cook, Brandon Figy, Max Maxson, Micah Owens, Jeremy Peters, David Rodriguez, Dylan Ross and Kellie Wilson for another great year.

Power Division I, boys ages 10-11, is very much a transitional year for players moving to a bigger court, using a bigger ball and having violations called on them at a higher level. This transition means coaching these boys can be very challenging but again, the volunteer coaches did a great job to ensure the transition was made, and the kids had fun. Thank you to Zack Calandra, Denise Dedrick, Mark Simmons, Alicia Sorensen and Tandy Taylor for your efforts and enabling the players in the PD I Division to have a phenomenal season.

Power Division II, boys ages 12-14, saw all new coaches this season and all of them brought a great demeanor and understanding of the game with them.

The teams were treated to a pre-season skills camp directed by Mingus Union High School coach Mark Owens and a season finally televised by Yavapai Broadcasting. Thanks to Ivan Anderson, Jeff Cook, David Snyder and Sean Rutledge for your positive influence on the kids and thank you Coach Owens for your involvement with the program this season.

The Girl’s League, girls ages 10-14, was once again able to get off to a fast start with the support and cooperation of all 3 coaches who were able to work together and start practices on time. Thank you Rick Findley, Sondra and Todd Grandy and Sevio Serna for giving these girls an outstanding season.

These leagues would also not be able to happen without additional support from the Cottonwood Oak Creek School District, Mingus Union High School, Cottonwood Recreation Center and Verde Baptist Church for providing the gym space needed to accommodate 20 teams, thank you all.

Last but not least, we must thank the officials, scorekeepers and gym supervisor. The level of appreciation for these positions has always been high but this year my appreciation was taken to a new level as I was needed to officiate some of the games myself, and it is NOT EASY. Thank you Donnie Buss Tim Hay, Joe Perez, Luke Simmons, Mark Simmons, and Frank Soqui for officiating, Kaytee Blount, Chris Dedrick, Mikala Lennon and Robert Valentine for keeping score and thanks to Jack Bedwell for being the Gym Supervisor. Great season everyone! See you all next November and we will do it all over again.
