Letter: They are heroes even when they are not being heroes
On behalf of myself and Kids Against Hunger Verde Valley, I would like to extend our utmost thanks and appreciation to the firemen of the Verde Valley and Cottonwood fire departments. Kids Against Hunger Verde Valley is a small non-profit organization that brings people together to pack food for the hungry. We have many needs when it comes putting on our events.
The firemen of Verde Valley Fire District, whenever not on a call, have made themselves available to us at every turn. In the past year, thanks to Fire Chief Nazih Hazime and the organizational efforts of Assistant Chief Jerry Doerksen, the Verde Village station’s firemen have helped us load and transport thousands of pounds of food and supplies to various locations, and as time allowed, helped us set up for the packing events.
In May, the Cornville firemen opened up both their hearts and their station to host a packing event for the Cornville community, a tremendous effort on their part as well. Most recently, Cottonwood Chief Mike Kuykendall and the firemen of Cottonwood came to our Oct. 13 event and assisted the community in the packing of 50,000 meals for the hungry.
I have come to know and really be thankful for these local heroes; ones whom I am ashamed to say that I have taken for granted. Forgive me, gentlemen (and you are, one and all). I have seen “the error of my ways.” You are a selfless, hard-working, respectful, humble group of men, who have become a family of your own. You serve our community tirelessly and do so much behind the scenes, serving our community in many ways that most of us never see.
These firemen deserve our heartfelt thanks and words of appreciation. May I encourage our Verde Valley community, next time you see them out and about, please take the time to encourage and thank them for all they do.
Firemen of the Verde Valley/Cottonwood fire departments: you are truly friends of Kids Against Hunger. You deserve to share the praise and recognition we receive as we work together to feed the starving children of Haiti and the hungry here at home. We would not have been able to reach our goal of 200,000 meals packed in 2012, without you!
