V Bar V Ranch to host Explorers Day
Spots are still available on the bus to V Bar V Ranch Explorers Day, to be held Saturday, Aug. 24, at Mahan Park, the summer headquarters of the University of Arizona V Bar V Ranch near Happy Jack. Participants are also welcome to drive themselves. Registration deadline is Friday, August 16.
In addition to attending various educational activities and enjoying a cool day on a working cattle ranch, those attending will enjoy a V Bar V Ranch beef pit barbecue lunch with Dutch oven cobbler dessert, while listening to bluegrass music!
This year's theme is entitled "The V Bar V Ranch: Connecting Animal, Range, and Human Health." University of Arizona personnel will talk about Food Safety - Past and Future, as well as Herd Health and the Arizona Livestock Incident Response Team (ALIRT). The V Bar V Range Management team will lead native plant walks and hands-on rangeland monitoring activities. A local horse trainer will demonstrate the stages of horse training beginning with a colt that has had no previously training.
Exhibits will include trained BLM mustangs from the Arizona Correctional Industries' new Wild Horse training program in Florence. And, the V Bar V Ranch Chuckwagon cook will show how the V Bar V beef lunch is barbecued in a pit and demonstrate how he makes his famous Dutch oven cobblers!
Buses will run to the ranch from Prescott, Prescott Valley, Sedona, Cottonwood, and Camp Verde. Transportation and lunch are included in the registration fee of $30 for adults and $15 for students.
