Shelter raises adoption fees
COTTONWOOD - Adopters are paying $20 more to bring home small dogs and puppies from Cottonwood's animal shelter, said board president Grace Lahr.
A recent dog dump left the Adopt for Life Animal Center scrambling to treat, vaccinate and fix 11 dogs at once. The six puppies in that group had all found homes when the shelter got three more.
"It's more expensive for puppies because of all the shots, and most are not spayed or neutered," Lahr said. "With the amount of puppies and small dogs that are coming in under five years, we felt it was necessary to raise that rate."
Dogs under 5 years old and puppies now cost $100 to adopt. All other rates stayed the same, and Lahr said she is working to create a special fund that will eliminate the $50 surrender fee.
Yavapai County will also help increase revenue through a new contract that allows Animal Care and Control to bring strays directly to Adopt for Life, rather than traveling to Prescott or Camp Verde.
