Red Tee Report

It's mid-summer and high season for the Northern Arizona Women's Golf Association, known to us simply as NAWGA. Its first mission is "To promote participation, equitable competition, and recognition of women's golf in Northern Arizona". To most of us, the important thing is that they organize opportunities for us to play courses that we wouldn't otherwise experience. And that's fun!

Our very own Donna Cantello is currently serving as President of NAWGA, flanked by OCC Team Captain Allene Richlie, and Club Representative Dawn Bush.

NAWGA arranges four tournaments during the season, starting with The Kickoff, open to presidents and reps of all northern clubs. The other tournaments are open to all NAWGA members, the only requirement being the payment of a $5 membership fee at least 30 days prior to the event.

The second tournament is The Seniors, held this year on June 11 at Pinewood GC, Munds Park. This one was flighted according to age, and OCC made a good showing here. Lori Zaun performed her usual and won overall low gross with a stunning 77. Also, Allene Richlie, Julie Larson and Sandy Bruns took prizes in their flights.

Next is Stroke Play Championship at Sedona Golf Resort on August 13, and finally Partners Tournament at Cerbat Cliffs in Kingman on September 24. Handicap doesn't matter (except that you must have one). Any index over 36 is reduced to 36 for competition, but you are still eligible.

NAWGA also runs Team Play, a series of matches among participating clubs. This year, 10 northern clubs are participating, and for each event, four players from each club are chosen. Again, a low handicap is not necessary, since there are net awards. So far, team members have included Lori Zaun, Julie Larson, Liz Chang, Dawn Bush, Allen Richlie, Donna Cantello, and LeeAnn Morgan.

On July 15, excitement ran high as second place OCC took on first place Elephant Rocks, a challenging match, won by OCC. We remain in second place, however, because Prescott Lakes sent in their heavyweights and shot up to first!

Congratulations to all for a hard-fought battle. And thanks to all who participate. We are so proud!
