Art raffle to benefit Cornville Historical Society
The Cornville Historical Society is pleased to announce that tickets are now on sale for its 2013 Art Raffle. Prizes are two donated archival prints of watercolor paintings by Clarkdale Artist Judy Jaaskelainen, which will be displayed at Cornville businesses and tickets will be sold. throughout the summer.
First prize is titled "Local Honey" with a fall theme; and the second prize is "Dressed for the Holidays" with a winter theme. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5. At the drawing on Oct. 9, two lucky people will each win a print, beautifully matted by the artist in 23-by-29-inch frames. Ticket purchasers will not have to be present to win. Proceeds will be used for historical projects, such as the restoration of the old Cornville Post Office & Store, recently returned to its original location on Cornville Road.
Judy Jaaskelainen says about her art: "I have been painting with watercolor for over 30 years. I love the transparent properties of watercolor paints and how I can let the medium 'do its thing' on wet paper, which sometimes feels like the painting is creating itself. I paint to express my excitement at being present; and I paint a variety of subject matter. My awe of beauty, my reverence for life, and my sense of humor move me to paint a variety of subject matter. Some of my paintings are like children showing off for their mother with bright, bold colors. Others of my works are tranquil."
Jaaskelainen's paintings can be nostalgic as well. The raffle prints portray an old pickup truck that once sat in front of the old Maxfield's Produce Market in rural Cornville for several years. The truck was often decorated and displayed produce in keeping with the season.
The framed prints can be seen and tickets purchased at the following locations from April through September: April--Windmill Gardens; May-Up the Creek Grill; June-Desert Market; July-Verde Santa Fe Pro Shop; August--Cornville Post Office & Cornville Mercantile; and September-Javelina Leap Winery. The drawing will be held on Oct. 9, during a special historical society meeting at the Cornville Fire Station.
