May is bicycle awareness month

The City of Cottonwood is in high gear and is celebrating in a big way. Cottonwood is a bronze-designated bicycle friendly city, according to the League of American Bicyclists

Kids have been asked to design bicycle racks for placement around city facilities. Cottonwood wants to come up with a unique design for its own bicycle racks. The design must incorporate the city logo and be submitted to the Cottonwood Recreation Center, attn Kevin Dix by May 30.

May 13-17 is bike to work week. Cottonwood joins other communities around the nation in biking to work.

The Ride of Silence May 15 is a bike ride to honor those who have been killed while riding a bicycle. The ride begins at 4:30 p.m. at Riverfront Park, south onto 10th Street to North Main, east and south to Willard and then north to Old Town.

May 17-19 is the MS Ride the Vortex Event. The Mayor, Manager and Cottonwood City Council have challenged other city governments to "Ride the Vortex" and raise money for Multiple Sclerosis. So far, Sedona has joined the competition. Last year, more than 800 riders raised more than $600,000 for the MS Society. The bicycling event will course several routes from 30 miles to over 100 miles in length. The ride begins and ends at the Cottonwood Kids Park.

The Mayor's Ride is held May 17. Mayor Joens is invited everyone to ride with her on Friday, May 17, beginning at 8:30 a.m. from Viejo Park, located at 70 E. Elm Street.

May 18 Yavapai County's Annual Cycle and Safety Celebration. The event, which takes place at Garrison Park runs from 9 a.m. until noon. It will feature a drawing to give away two bicycles, bike safety checks, helmet fittings and a bike skills course. Free helmets will also be provided to those who need them.

It's all sponsored by Safe Routes to Schools and Yavapai County Health Services, with support of the Cottonwood Police and Fire Departments, Zoomers Bike Shop and other community members.
