Hiker killed by falling tree on West Fork
OAK CREEK CANYON -- Thursday morning, 80-year-old Phyllis Lindberg of Sedona was hiking with four friends in West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon. The group stopped for lunch just after 11 a.m., resting on a log near the trail. A large conifer tree fell striking Lindberg who died from injuries of the impact. Another member of the hiking party received minor injuries from the tree fall, but refused medical treatment.
The incident occurred about 2.5 miles from the West Fork Trailhead off SR 89A.
Members of the hiking party made the emergency call for help, initially received by the Sedona Fire Department. Sedona Fire crews found Lindberg deceased. Coconino County Sheriff's Office Deputies, Detectives, Search and Rescue and Forest Service Law Enforcement responded to the scene. Search and Rescue Team Members recovered the victim and carried her to an ambulance by stokes basket.
