Power of Life concert features Tom & Shondra, Sammy Davis
The Center for Positive Living Sedona proudly presents two very special evenings of music and theatre on Monday & Tuesday, April 14 and 15, at 7 p.m. in celebration of Good Friday with the presentation of the "The Power of Life" concert. This concert features Sedona's popular entertainers Tom & Shondra and Sammy Davis. The concert will be presented as a fund-raiser for CPL Sedona at its new location 45 Castle Rock Road in the Village of Oak Creek.
Prior to their relocation to Sedona in 2002, Tom and Shondra performed their "Power of Life" concert throughout southern California for over 18 years. In 2003 they debuted it at Unity of Sedona, where it became an annual event and later in 2006 performed it for several years annually at the Center for Spiritual Living in Flagstaff.
Shondra explained, "We're excited to bring this concert back this year after a hugely successful fund-raiser last year. Sammy will be with us again and we have a line up of professional actors as our readers that our audience is going to thoroughly enjoy." Jepperson continued, "This concert is non-religious but rather inspirational, which allows this show to appeal to a wide audience and I think that's one of the reasons why this program has always been so successful." Tom agreed, "Between the variety of music and monologues, this program will take you on a ride of emotions. It's a wonderful way of celebrating the life of Jesus. Having Sammy with us again this year is going to be amazing especially for those in Sedona who have never seen or heard Sammy singing songs from Jesus Christ Superstar."
Sammy Davis is best known around Sedona and the Verde Valley as an exciting entertainer with his band, The Sammy Davis Band as well as his portrayal of the late James Brown and Jimmy Hendrix in the popular tribute band, The Heavenly J's. He's also performing weekly with his band at The Encore Theatre in the Village of Oak Creek. For those who don't know, Sammy Davis has quite a background in theatre and played the leading role in CBS producer writer Ron Bacon's musical, The Chicken Man in the year 2000 at the Sedona Art Barn. Sammy Davis commented, "I'm really happy to be performing musical theatre again. It's almost been a forgotten part of my life and it feels good to be reconnected with theatre, acting and singing this kind of material. Tom & Shondra and I really enjoyed performing this show together last year and we're hoping those who missed it will come out to see it this time."
The combination of soaring vocals and recitations of monologues performed in the style of Readers Theatre, bring the audience a profound understanding of Christ's love for humanity. It exemplifies the truth that light conquers and vanquishes darkness and depicts Christ's triumph over death. The show consists of musical selections from Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell interspersed with acting monologues performed in a reader's theatre format from Kahlil Gibran's book, "Jesus The Son Of Man." The audience will hear from Biblical characters such as Mary Magdalene, Anna Mother of Mary, Cyborea Mother of Judas, Peter, Pontius Pilate and Barabbas portrayed by a talented group of talented actors in which include Jeff Masters, Michael Peach, Shaeri Richards, Kate Hawkes, Jojo Cottle, Rev. Glenn Farley and Rev. Janet Kingsley. Shondra added, "We are extremely excited to have professional actors join us this year gifting their time and talents as Sammy, Tom and I are, to help us fund-raise for the CPL Sedona. The audience is in for a real treat."
Rev. Janet Kingsley commented, "Shondra is our music director and Tom joins us as our other soloist every Sunday. Last year, this concert was the fund-raiser that helped us relocate to our own church home when we found that the venue we were holding our Sunday services was closing. This year, we're all looking forward to having the Power of Life concert performed on two nights. Sammy Davis joining Tom & Shondra plus all the professional actors are a must see."
