A look back at 2014: Cecilio Cruz

Cecilio Cruz

Cecilio Cruz

Cecilio Cruz was finally indicted this year for the murder of Marsol Gonzalez, a high school sweetheart and her full-term, but unborn son. The arrest came 17 years after the murder in a back alley where the two 17-year olds often met. But, the case is not over yet.

Cruz was always been the lead suspect in the double murder in Cottonwood, but, the evidence was never sufficient to take to the Grand Jury. It was a reality TV program, TNT's Cold Justice which brought to bear the manpower needed to re-interview dozens of people. Cruz has always maintained his innocence.

While Judge Michael Bluff in the Verde Court wanted to keep Cruz in jail until he produced a $100,000 cash only, Judge Jennifer Campbell, a Prescott judge, relaxed that restriction and allowed him to bond out if he raised 10 percent.

Cruz's arrest was one of the most closely followed stories of 2014 by VI readers. Four different postings on our Facebook page resulted in 36,284 total post reach and 79,551 total post impressions, according to Facebook statistics.
