Verizon withdraws Clarkdale cell tower application
CLARKDALE -- Verizon Wireless is going back to the engineers to find a new place to put a 65-foot cell tower in Clarkdale, said town senior planner Beth Escobar.
The utility company withdrew its application for 885 First South Street, across from the post office, during the zoning part of the application process.
"That site doesn't have the appropriate zoning," Escobar said. "They haven't selected another location yet."
Members of the public were invited to provide input through Feb. 8 during the Federal Communication Commission's environmental impact study.
Historic district zoning was adopted last year and allows for wireless facilities with a conditional use permits in commercial and industrial zones, Escobar said.
Towers up to 65 feet can be considered there, but that cap is at 200 if it is located somewhere like behind the slag pile near Clarkdale Metals.
"So far, we don't have any reapplication from Verizon," Escobar said. "Those are just the possibilities that are being discussed."
