PAWZ ON MAIN: Newest Old Town addition offers boutique pet products
COTTONWOOD - Taking their love for pets and animal rescue, Denise and Steve Strong moved from Lake Havasu City to open a boutique pet shop this month offering organic and natural pet foods in Old Town Cottonwood.
The wall behind the register at Pawz on Main is filled with pictures of the couple's many furry, forever friends, and a small pen keeps Chance, JoJo and Marley nearby while the couple mingle with customers.
Denise said she and her husband had fostered and rescued pets for years, so the next step was to open a store that catered to pet owners' needs.
Many pet foods on the market are made with ingredients that can harm an animal's digestive system, she said, and some are even recalled for safety.
"Changing your pet's diet can result in fewer intestinal problems and allergies, with fewer visits to the vet's office," she said.
The store offers grain-free formulas for dogs, and cats too, that might have allergies and sensitive stomachs. All food brands are made by family-owned business operating in the U.S., with "human-grade ingredients" and going up in price from $9.99, depending on size.
Denise said she did months of research to come up with a recall-free food inventory, ensuring that customers could come into the store to chat about their pets' needs and find the right product.
Ladybug outfits and denim harnesses make up part of the shop's inventory, along with pet-themed to-go cups, T-shirts and gifts. Denise said she'd reached out to local groups like the Verde Valley Humane Society to hold adoption events at the shop.
Part of the "Payments in Kind" program, Pawz on Main donates 20 percent of the profit from each credit card transaction to the local community.
