Two-person exhibit of award-winning artists at Lanning Gallery
Color and more color are the defining characteristics of the new exhibition set to open at Sedona's Lanning Gallery in October. Two award-winning artists are celebrated in "Brilliant Hues: Randi Solin Glass & Mark Gould Paintings"; both are coming to town to attend the opening 1st Friday artists reception, Oct. 3, 5-8 p.m.
Randi Solin, who has been devoted to the art of blown glass for over twenty years, approaches her three-dimensional work as a two dimensional artist would, creating singular compositions as she goes. The elegant simplicity of her vessel forms allows for a complex and painstaking coloration process to unfold.
Her hand-blowing process takes between 3-5 hours for each piece; Solin and her assistants cannot stop until a piece is complete. It then slowly cools over three days in an annealer. It takes an entire day to cut and polish the lip. This straight cut across the top of her pieces is a signature of sorts; as Solin explains, "My optics serve as the window into my coloration process - into the soul of a piece - allowing a viewer to peer into its life, like the rings of a tree."
Solin's technical skills and imagination has led to innumerable Best in Show and Best in Class awards; she has pieces in the permanent collections of The White House, several United States embassies and museums across the United States.
Color is also the overriding characteristic of Mark Gould's paintings. His artistic sensibility is one that breaks rules freely as he captures the very essence of a landscape. Light will frequently figure strongly in his works, allowing colorations to shift and blend powerfully under its influence; shadows conceal color and textures seen with an artist's eye rather than botanical reality.
Gould's tools are varied: brushes and trowels, scrapers, chisels, a wide collection of palette knives, even an air gun. He paints quickly, using acrylics which dry rapidly, allowing him to stay with a painting, moving from layer to layer.
His paintings are now held in private and public collections internationally. Gould's many awards include a 2010 Best of Show from the prestigious Gilcrease Museum. In 2014 Gould was invited to participate in Tucson's Mountain Oyster Club's 45th Annual Contemporary Western Art Show & Sale.
"Brilliant Hues: Randi Solin Glass & Mark Gould Paintings" through Oct.12th.
