Letters: Do Hell's Angels go antiquing?
Like Nancy Burnett, I'm not a big fan of the Thunder Valley Rally either. Not this year. Maybe because the event wasn't advertised in the Arizona Republic this time ("too expensive', I'm told) but rather in "Biker Publications."
I lost count of the unhappy tourists, who came up with their families for a day of antiquing and a nice lunch, only to find public drunkenness, profanity and noise. Had they known, they would have come another time. I know this because they told me.
The long, convoluted "detour" in and out of Old Town made me hope and pray that no fire engines or ambulances would be needed.
If you calculate the event's success by the numbers showing up, then yes, I suppose it was a success. Certainly, the beer vendors were doing a lot of business.
But it was pretty much a bust for the Old Town merchants I spoke with. Will some of the bikers return later to shop and dine? Maybe. Is that how it works for places like Sturgis? Do "Hell's Angels" go antiquing?
