COTTONWOOD - When you get a chance to start your season in front of your home town fans, you take advantage of it. The Mingus Marauders did just that Friday night defeating Cactus Shadows by a score of 42-15, outscoring the Falcons 35-7 in the first half.
Senior Quarterback Jordan Upham got the scoring started at the 11 minute mark in the first quarter when he took off for the end zone on a 75-yard touchdown run. Senior Tristan Clark followed up Upham's first touchdown with one of his own running one in from 19-yards out to make it 12-0 Marauders at the end of the first quarter.
Clark and Upham weren't done yet though as Upham found Clark for a 53-yard pass at the 11:41 mark in the second quarter for the third touchdown of the game. It wasn't long before Upham found the end zone again running for a 34-yard touchdown just under a minute later, and junior Trey Meyer followed up with his first PAT of the night to make it 19-0.
The defense got the Marauders on the scoreboard next when Pete and Tyler Kelly sacked Cactus Shadows Quarterback Andrew Young in the end zone for a five-yard loss and a safety, putting two more points on the board for the Marauders.
The Falcons would answer back though two minutes later when Young got away from the stifling Marauders defense for a 31-yard touchdown run to put the Falcons on the scoreboard just before half.
The Falcons would end up giving the Marauders too much time though as Jordan Upham punched in his third rushing touchdown from 24-yards out with just three seconds left on the clock in the half. He then punched in the 2-point conversion attempt to make it 35-7 at halftime.
Cactus Shadows would put the only points on the board in the third quarter when Young scampered into the end zone from one yard out. The Falcons were then successful on a two-point conversion attempt when Matt Sill hit Mike Maloney with a pass in the back of the end zone with 1:05 left in the third.
Mingus would close out the scoring Friday night when Jordan Upham found junior Trevor Galloway for a 27-yard pitch-and-catch into the end zone with 2:35 left in the game, Meyer would add on the extra point to finish it off. Galloway's touchdown was his only catch of the night.
