Letters: Threats to groundwater also a threat to our river

Editor:

Ed Wolfe, of the Verde River Basin Partnership in his column, "A River for the Future: Will We Have One" reminds readers of the importance of groundwater to the perennial flow of the Verde River, its tributaries, and the lifestyle we enjoy in the Verde Valley.

The fact that groundwater maintains the base flow of the river is not always obvious, but critical to be aware of. The reliance of the Verde River Basin on groundwater for industrial, domestic and municipal has already resulted in the loss of the initial 5 miles of river in the upper Verde River Basin and threatens other reaches of the river.

Population growth in the coming years will increase groundwater pumping. If we wish to enjoy the Verde River in the future we must begin now to plan how we can augment groundwater and decrease demand for it.
