Extreme caution advised when rafting river
The damage to the USGS streamflow gauge located upriver from Clarkdale during the recent floods has now been repaired and Clarkdale Town Manager Gayle Mabery reports that USGS has now gone back and made projections about the flows, and are indicating that they believe the peak flow in Clarkdale was at about 7,000 cfs. The high water caused heavy impacts to the area around the Brewer's Tunnel Dam, making the portage around the west end of the dam more difficult than it was prior to the flood. Signage is being posted in the area warning boaters to use extreme caution until repairs can be made. The Town of Clarkdale is currently working with the property owner, Freeport McMoRan, Inc. to devise and implement a plan to repair the damage caused by the flood. With such high flood flows throughout the Verde River, local boaters are reporting lots of new snags and obstacles throughout the river system in the Verde Valley. Anyone boating, even those who are experienced on these sections of the Verde River, should use extreme caution.
