Mingus Swim competes at Wolves Classic
CHANDLER - On Saturday, the Mingus Marauders swim team traveled to Chandler to compete at the Wolves Classic, and the first qualifying meet of the year. 44 teams competed at the Mingus boys placed 23rd out of those 44 teams, which were mostly Division 1 schools, Mingus is a Division II program.
The boys' team for Mingus had two swimmers automatically qualify for states during their meet on Saturday.
Sean Williams qualified for states in the 50m freestyle swim and the 100m freestyle swim. Williams finished 11th in the 50m freestyle with a time of 22.35 seconds and the automatic qualifying time was 22.72 seconds. In the 100m freestyle swim, Williams finished in 50.05 seconds, netting him a 17th place finish. The automatic qualifying time was 50.41. Caleb Furey also netted an automatic qualifying time for states when he placed 20th in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:04.83. The automatic qualifying time was 1:05.16.
The boys also netted some provisional times for states. Provisional times are not guaranteed spots in states. But the times will be considered if they are within the top 32 in the state.
In the 200 medley relay, Furey and Williams, were joined by Gunner Tillemans and Fletch Fangman.
They finished in 17th with a time of 1:48.61. Their time was 3 seconds off of a Division II automatic qualifying time. The same relay team was at it again in the 200m freestyle relay placing 12th with a time of 1:35.25. This was just two seconds over the 1:33.00 automatic qualifying time for states.
Other than the two relays the Marauders also had four other swimmers with provisional times for states. In the 200m freestyle Gunner Tillemans finished in 1:59.31. The automatic qualifying time was 1:52.79. Tillemans also competed in the 500m freestyle. He finished with a time of 5:34.00, and the automatic qualifying time was 5:12.65.
In the 200m IM, Fletch Fangman finished with a time of 2:22.20, with the automatic qualifying time being 2:09.00. In the 50m freestyle, Caleb Furey finished with a time of 23.47, just under a second short of the automatic qualifying time of 22.72. Personal bests were also set for some of the boys from the Mingus swim team.
Jonah Bramblett set a personal best in the 100m freestyle. Dallin Gordon set a personal best in the 100m breaststroke and the 100m freestyle. And David Briggs set a personal best for himself in the 100m backstroke.
On the girls side for Mingus personal bests were set for one of the relay teams and eight other swimmers also gave their best at the first qualifying meet of the year. Skylar Mohr set two personal bests, one in the 200m freestyle, and one in the 100m freestyle. Sarah Bramblett handed in her fastest time as well in the 200m freestyle.
In the 50m freestyle, Aubrey Boulet, Danni Schultz, and Robin Rogers all turned in their best times yet. Rylie Burke set her best time in the 100m butterfly, and Anissa Zorrilla turned in her best time in the 100m freestyle.
Macee Cook also turned in a personal best in the 100m breaststroke. In the 400m freestyle relay, a team of Anissa Zorrilla, Christine Wills, Sarah Bramblett, and Emily Grasso set their personal best as well.
Mingus will square off with, Scottsdale Prep, Fredonia, and Prescott at home on Tuesday. Then the Marauders will be off until Thursday, October 8, when they are at home again to face off with Flagstaff and Fredonia.
