Winiecki, Jackson Sr. place first YAN primary

CAMP VERDE - Results of the Yavapai-Apache Nation (YAN) Aug. 1 primary election put Jane Winiecki in first place for Tribal Chair and Larry Jackson Sr. in the lead for Vice Chair, edging out the two incumbents who will still advance to the Sept. 17 election.

The lead vote-getters earned the opportunity to run against current Tribal Chair Thomas Beauty and Vice Chair Darlene Rubio. According to the YAN, the election tally was 151 votes for Jackson Sr., 87 votes for Rubio, 86 votes for Winiecki and 78 votes for Beauty.

Edged-out of the upcoming election were third-place finishers Siera Russell with 73 votes for Tribal Chair and Raymond Trujillo with 59 votes for Vice Chair. In all, eight contestants earned 380 votes in the primary run for Tribal Chair. Meanwhile, the five contestants for Vice Chair received a total of 387 votes.
