Camp Verde man arrested for screwdriver stabbing in VOC
SEDONA -- About 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Yavapai County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a reported family fight in an apartment building at 70 Bell Rock Blvd. in the Village of Oak Creek
The caller said that her brother, 22-year-old Erasmo Nevarez, was attacking her 27-year-old husband with a screwdriver.
The first deputy to arrive learned that family members, including the victim, were trying to hold Nevarez down inside an apartment bathroom. Nevarez is 6-feet tall and weighs over 260 pounds. Deputies entered the bathroom and subdued Nevarez.
The victim sustained significant stab-related injuries, including a laceration to his rib cage and lacerations on his face. Blood was evident throughout the bathroom.
Nevarez was compliant with deputies but refused to talk about the incident. Deputies placed him under arrest.
Deputies were told that when the victim walked through the apartment door after arriving home from work, Nevarez stood up from the couch where he was sitting, removed a screwdriver from his pocket and attacked the man. Three children were also present in the apartment when the attack occurred.
EMS personnel treated the victim and his wife. The victim's wife received cuts and scratches trying to hold Nevarez down until deputies arrived. The victim was transported to Verde Valley Medical Center for treatment.
Deputies recovered the screwdriver. The family was unclear as to the exact motivation for the attack, but said Nevarez was suffering from several medical issues and is quick to anger. There was no evidence the attack was provoked.
Nevarez, from Camp Verde, was booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, disorderly conduct per domestic violence and assault per domestic violence.
He remains in-custody on a $10,000 bond.
