With Mingus’ 52-49 loss, the Marauders are 5-3 overall and 2-1 in region.

PRESCOTT VALLEY – Two days after suffering its worst defeat of the season, Bradshaw Mountain High’s girls’ basketball team responded, defeating Mingus Union, 52-49, in a Grand Canyon Region contest Friday night, Dec. 16, at Kunow Gym.

The Bears, who lost 73-25 Wednesday at Cactus Shadows, evened their region record at 2-2.

Bradshaw Mountain is now 6-6 overall and 5-3 in power-point games.

Mingus fell to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the region, snapping a two-game winning streak.

Bradshaw was led by Haley Young, who tallied a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Elah Alvis (12 points, three assists) and Mica Nellis (11 points, four rebounds) followed.

“It’s a big win,” Young said. “It puts us back up there with Flagstaff [3-0 region] and Coconino [2-0], and puts us back right where we want to be – in a good position for the playoffs.”

Mingus senior guard Destiny Razo registered a game-high 21 points, as she knocked down six 3-pointers.

Trina Honwytewa (10 points, four rebounds) and Nikki Zielinski (eight points, eight boards) chipped in for the visitors.

The Bears started the game slowly, trailing 10-4 at the end of the first period.

But they picked it up, outscoring the Marauders 17-8 in the second quarter for a 21-18 halftime lead.

Bradshaw outscored Mingus again in the third, 22-14, to pull in front 43-32.

The Marauders rallied in the fourth, but Young scored seven of her 19 points in the frame to seal it.

“I don’t go in [a game] thinking, ‘I’m going to be the one to score all these points,’ ” Young said. “But if I have to be the person to help the team move forward, to get everyone pumped up, then that’s what I’ll do.”

Mingus will spend time off for the holidays before visiting Coconino in region play at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 3, in Flagstaff.
