COTTONWOOD - As the expression goes, bigger is better.

That's the game plan for the Maverik store in Cottonwood.

The convenience store and gas dispensary at SR89A at Mingus Avenue is proposed to more than double its size.

The business, which has offered some of the cheapest gas prices in town and the most convenience shopping on the West side of Cottonwood now the store proposes to offer more of the products.

Just under 2,400 square feet now, the proposed store is a larger, more contemporary version of the store with double the square footage at 5,046 square feet and two front doors, which will avoid the crowded conditions that clog the store during rush hours.

The concept is proposed as part of a conditional use permit to be considered by the Planning and Zoning Commission at its meeting the evening of Feb. 22.

Maverik already owns three properties at the intersection, two parcels already developed plus another ½ acre immediately to the east.

The company has also been talking with the Verde Valley Medical Center about acquiring, possibly, another ½ acre for the expansion.

The new convenience store would be constructed on the most easterly properties with additional gas pumps placed on the existing land.

Last October, the community had mixed feelings about closure of the Sizzler at the corner of SR260 and SR89a and its acquisition by Maverik as a new gas and convenience store.
