New pastor named for Shepherd Lutheran Church of Cornville
Our Shepherd Lutheran Church of Cornville is pleased to announce the arrival of its new pastor and his wife, the Rev. Steven and Karen Wilkens, who come to the Verde Valley from Bethany Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin.
Pastor Wilkens, one of six children, grew up on a dairy farm near West Bend, Wisconsin. During his college years he showed his love of sports, playing baseball and football and wrestling. He graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wis., in 1983.
Steve and Karen met during his last year of college and were married in July 1981. They have three grown children, Rachel, Tim and Amy, and seven grandchildren, six girls and a boy.
Coming to the Verde Valley is a homecoming of sorts for the Wilkenses. Before spending 19 years in Wisconsin, they lived in New Mexico for 13 years where Pastor Wilkens established Peace Lutheran Church of Rio Rancho, near Albuquerque.
Our Shepherd Lutheran holds services Sundays at 9 a.m. and Wednesdays at 4 p.m. during Lent at Oak Creek School in Cornville, located off Page Springs Road at El Rancho Bonito and Purple Sage Road, while awaiting renovation of its new facility on Page Springs Road near the fire station.
The church is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.
