Offices closed, fees waived for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday

At one time in Arizona history, recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. was a point of division. There was a time when the Town of Jerome was the only Arizona government to formally recognized Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrated his birthday.

Former Gov. Evan Mecham actually cancelled a paid Martin Luther King Jr. Day for state employees, and instead identified an unpaid Sunday remembrance,

Today, MLK Day is both a national holiday and is recognized by the state for diversity and the opportunity for all Americans as well as a day of service.

All municipal, state and federal government offices will be closed. Emergency Services will function, though administrative offices will not.

Traditional public district schools are closed on Martin Luther King Day, including all facilities of the Cottonwood Oak Creek, Camp Verde School District, Sedona School District, Beaver Creek School, Clarkdale-Jerome and Mingus Union High School.
