Smiles are contagious and best gift we can give
Now that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season has come to an end and most people have packed and stored their Christmas ornaments and taken down the lights that were strung outside their homes for another year, let us take time to reflect on that period of time that stretches from Thanksgiving till the New Year.
The stress and panic of trying to find the right gift for a loved one, a friend, a colleague at work or for some unknown individual that you wish to surprise, can become so overwhelming. Can you imagine what it would be like if the Christmas celebration was once a month?
Wouldn't it be nice if everyone thought of the joy of giving to others every day? It could be something really simple - like a smile. Doesn't cost anything! It's good for the face muscles! Makes you feel good and the other person feel good! It is a natural response to having good thoughts and feeling good about oneself. And, it is especially a great way to thank people who have made a difference and enriched the lives of others along life's winding path.
The volunteers of the Verde Valley Senior Center all experienced the joy of giving when they delivered hundreds of packages filled with items that would bring exuberating moments to the home-bound seniors, and a big smile.
Packages containing towels, laundry soap, toiletries, stuffed animals, and other useful items, all collected and donated by the Giving Angels along with light bulbs and flashlights donated by APS. A dozen fabulous homemade quilts donated by Quail Country Quilters were distributed to surprised, special seniors and a few select clients received extraordinary gift packages from the Donation Angels.
There has been so much smiling and giving by so many that there isn't room on this page to mention all who helped us feed 375 seniors Christmas Dinner and make sure that everyone received a gift - with a smile. It was all about community!
Our heartfelt thanks to the many volunteers who made donations of time, and contributors who supported our work in 2015, and made tax credit donations and monetary contributions that have renewed our optimism to continue our home-delivered meal services to all local communities.
Words cannot adequately express the impact your contribution has on the lives of those we serve.
Remember, smiles are contagious - give it to others and they can feel the 'side effects.'
Sam Blom is the president of the Verde Valley Senior Citizens' Assn.
