National bicycle representative advises local riders
VERDE VALLEY -- An official with the American League of Bicyclists was in the Verde Valley recently to advise Bicycle Friendly Cities of Cottonwood and Sedona how they might move to the next level.
Cottonwood is ranked as a Bronze Bicycle Friendly City, Sedona is ranked a Silver City. The Verde Valley Cyclists Coalition works to advocate for improving cyclists opportunities in the Verde.
Bob Richards of the local coalition says the ALB official suggested Old Town Cottonwood needs bike rails to park bikes, that 4-foot-width bike lanes be increased to 5-foot lanes and that it is not necessary to paint bike lanes on long downhill runs, such as Fir Street, where bicyclists would achieve motorist speeds and blend into traffic.
Richards reported that the Association official was impressed that Cottonwood and Sedona were able to accommodate bike friendly communities, even without property taxes.
