Expect busy highways for Thanksgiving holiday

PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Public Safety aims to reduce fatalities from impaired driving, speeding, aggressive driving, and lack of occupant protection.

Drivers will notice a large presence of troopers throughout the state, especially within the holiday safety corridors Nov. 23 – Nov. 27.

Holiday safety corridors:

• I-17 between north Phoenix and Flagstaff

• I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson

• SR 87 between Mesa and Payson

DPS said during last year’s Thanksgiving travel period, troopers investigated 149 collisions where a driver was cited for a speed violation, and investigated three fatal collisions statewide. In 2014, troopers investigated four fatal collisions during the same period.

Before traveling, DPS wants drivers to prepare by reviewing traffic tips, checking road and weather conditions, and carrying supplies in case of an emergency.

More information:

• Road closures or traffic delays:

• Weather conditions:

“Speeding is typically a primary or secondary factor in serious injury or fatal collisions. Troopers will be looking for drivers traveling above the posted speed limits, impaired drivers, distracted driving behavior and tired drivers,” said Captain Eric Anspach with the Highway Patrol Division.
