Verde Valley school districts offer free summer meals through USDA

VERDE VALLEY – This summer, Verde Valley school districts will partner with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Summer Food Service Program to offer free meals to children ages 18 and younger.

Weekdays from Tuesday, May 30 through Friday, June 30, Mingus Union High School will provide free summer lunches.

With a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there are no income requirement or registration for children to receive a free meal, says Marylou Lopez, Nutrition Services Director for Mingus Union High School District.

“Children do not need to bring anything with them but a happy smiley face and a hungry little tummy, and we will be serving a hot lunches daily,” Lopez says.

Lopez also says she expects close to 150 youngsters each day at lunch, which will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Items served will include cheeseburgers, spaghetti, Salisbury beef with mashed potatoes, pizza, tacos, salad bar with fresh fruits, vegetables and milk.

Beaver Creek School will also serve hot food this summer. Beaver Creek School will serve both breakfast (at 8 a.m.) and lunch (at 11:30 a.m.) Monday through Thursday from June 5 through June 22.

Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District will serve hot lunch from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 5 through July 21 at Cottonwood Elementary School.

Says Bethany Campista, National School Lunch Program Coordinator for COCSD, adults can also eat lunch for $2. Both adults and children will be served the same-sized portion, Campista says.

Each Wednesday at Cottonwood Elementary School, Heather Klomparens from the health department will be on site to do activities with the kids, Campista also says.

Camp Verde Unified School District will serve both breakfast and lunch from May 30 through June 16, with breakfast from 7:15 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:15 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Breakfasts will include choice of main dish, with juice, fresh fruit and milk. Lunches will come with main dish, fruit, side and milk.

Meals will be served at the district’s cafeteria at the multi-use complex, located at 210 Camp Lincoln Road. Call Ida Pieratt, CVUSD food services director at 928-567-8025.

Schools will not be serving any meals on July 4.
