Cindy Gaylord, chairwoman of the Westfield Historical Commission, holds the original sword from the statue of Gen. William Shepard that stands near the town green in the center of Westfield, Mass., on Dec. 29, 2020. A veteran returned the sword he stole from the statue 40 years ago, telling Gaylord that he regretted taking it. (Don Treeger/The Republican via AP)
