Verde Heritage: 1899 atrocious murders in Camp Verde
The 1871 adobe walls of the Sutler’s Store still stand on the main street of Camp Verde. A man, who had been seen in the area for about a month, shot both store owners in the back, shot a man in the leg he had visited with, and fired shots at a fleeing witness. The murderer disappeared into the darkness and was followed at dawn by a posse of determined men on July 3, 1899. (Courtesy of Camp Verde Historical Society.)
