8th annual VOC BBQ returns May 14
The Village’s big spring celebration is back in May this year. Village residents’ families and children come together to celebrate for different reasons. Some come to enjoy the spring weather; others come for the sense of community, and the kids, well, they come to celebrate the end of another school year.
The eighth annual VOC Community BBQ is hosted by locals Damian Bruno and Danielle Giann, Omar Kenney and Andrew Bailor. We, as Village residents, are so happy to be able to go back to our traditional weekend in May and celebrate spring with our neighbors.
Like in past events, there will be Bouncy Houses and live music, face painting, and many other activities. And, of course, Rocky Road Ice Cream is back again with their free ice cream for all attendees.
Last year a new tradition began with a made-for-the-BBQ ice cream flavor, “Javelina Tracks” debuting. Javelina Tracks consists of Caramel ice cream with Chocolate Pecans and Graham Crackers and is only available at the Annual BBQ each year! So come on down and enjoy FREE ice cream from Rocky RD.
An excellent addition this year is live music with a Verde Valley favorite, “Local Honey” which will perform during the BBQ!
The Annual VOC BBQ started nine years ago when Damian and Danielle got the idea from gatherings they had at their home with local families. Damian thought it would be a great idea to have an annual barbecue here in the VOC since there were so few events taking place at the time with the idea of bringing the community together and just having a day filled with fun.
Since our kids played together, Damian and Danielle decided to invite their friend Andrew Bailor to help organize the event. The first year the event was scheduled for April; however, the day was rainy and even had hail! So, the event was postponed and took place on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, and that has turned into a tradition. The second year it became obvious that the BBQ would benefit with a little help, and that is when Omar Kenney got involved. A spring BBQ celebrating the end of the school year and warmer weather has since become a tradition in the VOC, only interrupted by the Pandemic.
The event is free again this year and is open to the public. There will be two different Bouncy House rides and various games for the children and their families. Clark’s will be supplying this year’s food, which will consist of BBQ pulled pork, BBQ pulled beef, and BBQ pulled chicken sandwiches!.
Come to VOCA Park to listen to music and enjoy BBQ food with your friends, family, and neighbors!
Every year we have tables/booths set up by local organizations. We are excited to announce the Science Vortex Center will be at the event again this year with a table and some interactive displays.
Face painting is one of the longest lines you will find during the event and will be just as popular this year. Gioia Quisumbing has been our face painter for the last few years, and she will be back! So, get those imaginations going and bring your painted-face ideas with you.
This event could not be possible without our sponsors: Sedona Village Partnership, Rocky Road Ice Cream, Eye Boutique, Yavapai Title, Bell Rock Veterinary, and Snap Fitness. Please remember to bring a reusable water bottle as the event will have water only, no disposable cups. There will be limited bottled waters this year as we try to reduce waste. We will have water stations to refill your personal bottles and cups. Bring a blanket or chair, and most importantly, enjoy yourselves! Saturday, May 14, is the 8th Annual Community BBQ at VOCA/Kiwanis Park located at 690 Bell Rock Blvd. from noon to 4 p.m.
