1949 - 2024

James Mackey Gray died peacefully in his sleep in the company of family in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Feb. 4, 2024. He was 74 years old.

He was born in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of Eleanor Irwin Gray and James Sidney Gray, May 10, 1949.

The family moved to Warner Robins, Georgia in 1963. He graduated from Northside High School.

James loved life as a professional musician and traveled extensively around Georgia, Florida and North Carolina. He and Carolyn married in 1974 in Birmingham, Alabama and they moved to Sedona, Arizona in 1979. He played rock ‘n’ roll throughout Arizona with bands Swinging Richard, The Ride, Russell Band, Coup De Ville, Loose Gravel, Excess Baggage, England and Stab in the Dark - just to name a few!

His love for firefighting began as a volunteer in Bowie, Arizona. James and Carolyn moved to Superior, Arizona in 1996. There, he became a firefighter and eventually the Assistant Chief of the Fire Department until 2013. He was instrumental in achieving numerous grants for the fire department. After becoming a paramedic, he worked at the Apache reservation until his retirement in 2018.

James created a music recording studio after retirement and participated in jam sessions in the park in downtown Superior until last year. He enjoyed fishing at Roosevelt Lake whenever there was a chance and generously shared his beautiful landscape photography with those he loved

He is survived by his wife Carolyn Gray of Superior, Arizona; his son, Jim Eagan of Las Vegas; his brother Al Gray of Macon, Georgia; niece Gina Waters, and nephew Ben Gray.
