CAMP VERDE - From January 1944 to March 1945 Dick Schmidt flew 50 missions over Japanese-controlled China. On each missions he flew one of America's premier fighter aircraft-the twin engine, twin tail P-38.It was the aircraft used by two of America's greatest aces of World War II, Richard Bong (40 victories) and Thomas McGuire (38 victories).Of the 50 flights, 49 of them were flown alone. He never had an escort and no one was around to cover his wing.
