In the last five years, Arizona has seen a 61-percent increase in the number of foster children. The average age of these children is 9 years old and they typically stay in the system for a couple of years before they are returned home or given a new home. It is nearly impossible for these kids to understand and cope with the tragic circumstances that led to their removal. They need loving families to step up and help.
1. “….how and when things went so very wrong.” Eight years ago when several million Republications thought Romney was a shoo-in and didn’t vote. Or, if you are referring to the recent election, it was when the democrats nominated Hillary. But then, what choice was there? None. The corrupt DNC saw to that.
It is the eve of Inauguration Day. Some of us are already celebrating. Others are waiting for to start the party. And then there are those like myself. Who are quietly, thoughtfully, going about our routine while the mind wanders backward to the past, forward to the uncertain future, wondering how and when things went so very wrong. While my lips form yet another prayer, my heart aches as I recall the words I heard not long ago from a fellow American-
On January 20th we’ll be saying goodbye to the Obamas. We’ll say goodbye to eloquence, class, integrity and intelligence. Whether or not you agree with President Obama’s politics you cannot question his compassion, hope for our future generations and his desire to do what he thought was best for our country.
“Violence as a way of achieving racial justice is both impractical and immoral. I am not unmindful of the fact that violence often brings about momentary results. Nations have frequently won their independence in battle. But in spite of temporary victories, violence never brings permanent peace.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mr. Barber’s and others’ use of the phrase “The Founders” is a misnomer. The Founders were a diverse and divided group, ranging from farmers to lawyers, and split mainly between Anti-Federalists, represented perhaps best by Jefferson, and Federalists, represented by Jefferson’s protege Madison, and Hamilton.
The United States is a land of plenty. From uneaten leftovers to spoiled produce, as a country we throw away millions of pounds of food waste annually. Yet, here in Yavapai County, as many as one out of three children, one out of five adults, and one out of seven seniors are food insecure.
The first “Trauma Services Day” hosted by the Mental Health Coalition Verde Valley was a great start in offering members of our community special services and tools to help them cope with depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress syndrome often increasing in intensity as holidays approach.
The Sedona-Verde Valley Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 3690, represents over 180 professional firefighters across our Verde Valley. Since our formation of our organization over 20 years ago, we have always supported elected officials that have supported our professional organization by providing us with safe staffing levels, equipment, and training to meet your needs during an emergency.
Unlike other states that have Propositions on Ballots, ours are carved in stone. They become more than just law, they are so concrete that they cannot be corrected if some part does not work as hoped. Our legislators, even the governor cannot fix it if it is broken. They are only allowed to make it worse.
I wish to respond to the two lengthy arguments written by Jesse Dowling that were recently published by this newspaper. Actually pretty much all of those in the pro-pot camp use the alcohol vs. pot argument. While not a real expert on either -- I drink a glass of wine or a margarita from time to time and have never smoked pot -- nor had the desire to smoke it. I fail to see a justifiable comparison.
